- What is Muay Thai? (Pronounced Moy Tie)
Muay Thai or Thai boxing was initially developed nearly one thousand years ago for unarmed combat on the battlefield, for use by Thai soldiers defending their nation of Siam against foreign invaders. Today, Muay Thai lives on as Thailand's national sport - with over 100'000 fighters actively competing in Thailand alone. Also known as the "Science of Eight Limbs", Muay Thai emphasizes simplicity and directness in its use of the body's "eight weapons", namely: punches, elbows, knees and kicks. However, Muay Thai's secret weapon lies in its system of extremely intense physical conditioning competitive athletes typically engage in 6 to 8 hours of training each day to be competitive. Muay Thai fighters are often considered to be among the toughest athletes to be found. Despite the intensity, Muay Thai is considered a sport founded on the values of honor and respect - athletes are expected to be gracious exponents of Muay Thai's rich and noble history in all contexts. With the advent of mixed martial arts events in recent years, Muay Thai is gaining increasing popularity as one of the most effective and toughest martial arts.
